Frequently Asked Waxing Questions

New to waxing? We have the answers you have been searching for! Here are answers to some of the most common questions we get, but feel free to contact us with any additional questions you might have!

  • Does waxing make my hair grow back thicker?

No, nothing can be done topically to your hair that will alter the anatomy of your hair shaft or hair follicle in terms of making hair grow thicker, darker or longer. In fact, waxing can actually lead to thinner, finer hair over time. Shaving cuts off the thickest part of the hair shaft (middle), which can give the illusion of new growth appearing dark and thick. Waxing removes hair from the root, so new hair grows back with a tapered end that makes it appear finer. Your hair growth is determined by genetics and hormones - waxing does not alter these factors. Regular waxing can cause weakening of the hair follicle, leading to less regrowth over time.

  • Can I shave in between my wax appointments?

It is not recommended to shave in between wax appointments. The reason for this is because all of your hairs need to be a similar length and in the same phase of the growth cycle. Shaving at random intervals in between waxes will change the length and shape of your hairs, resulting in a less efficient, and oftentimes more painful waxing experience.

  • How do I prepare for my wax appointment?

Please do not shave for 3 to 4 weeks prior to your wax appointment. Your body hairs must be the length of a piece of long grain rice so that the wax can pick up the hairs. Additionally, please avoid wearing lotions on the area (deodorant is fine). Discontinue the use of retinol (3 days), Tretinoin (7 days), and refrain from sunburns before and after your appointment.

  • What is the aftercare for waxing?

For body waxing, exfoliating can help prevent ingrown hairs by removing dead skin cells that trap hairs below the surface. Please do not exfoliate within 24 hours of your wax appointment. After this point, it is encouraged to exfoliate 2-3 times weekly. Your waxer can recommend safe and compatible products for exfoliation. Avoid sun and tanning beds directly after waxing as well as excessive sweating within the first 24 hours.

  • What kinds of wax do you use?

To ensure the comfort of every client, Jem Beauty Bar only uses hard wax for body waxing. Hard wax is a more gentle product that only adheres to the hair rather than the skin and is suitable for the removal of coarse body hair found on the underarms or brazilian area. For eyebrow waxing, we find that soft wax is the most efficient product - best for picking up finer hairs, resulting in a clean brow shape. Waxing naturally comes with discomfort - however, once you’re on a schedule, this discomfort becomes much more tolerable.

  • How often should I book my wax?

A recommended waxing schedule is every 4-6 weeks for ideal results.

  • Can I still get my bikini/brazilian wax if I'm menstruating?

Yes! Your waxer does not mind waxing a client on their period. Ultimately, it is down to your own comfort level. Keep in mind that hormonal changes during this time of the month can increase the discomfort of a wax.

  • What is the difference between a bikini and a brazilian wax?

A bikini wax is meant to remove hair that is visible outside of your underwear or bikini line while a brazilian wax removes all hair on the entire frontside, backside and outer bikini line.

  • Are there any waxing services you do not offer?

While Jem Beauty Bar strives to offer the services you desire, some may not be possible. For safety reasons, we do not offer waxing of male genitalia, mens beards, or head hair. This is because this is a different type of hair that can actually cause bruising or scarring when removed from the root using wax. Thank you for your understanding.

  • How long does a waxing appointment typically take?

The length of your waxing appointment at Jem Beauty Bar depends on the area being treated. For example, a brow or lip wax typically takes about 15 minutes, while a Brazilian wax can take 30-45 minutes. We always aim to work efficiently while ensuring your comfort during the process. Of course, if you are coming in for several services, you can expect these visits to be a little longer!

  • Can I wax if I have sensitive skin or allergies?

Absolutely! At Jem Beauty Bar, we use a high-quality wax that’s gentle on sensitive skin and fragrance free, which reduces irritation. If you have a history of allergies or sensitivities, please let us know before your appointment so we can take extra precautions, like patch testing or customizing your treatment.

  • Is waxing better than shaving?

Waxing offers several benefits over shaving! It removes hair from the root, meaning smoother skin that lasts up to 3-4 weeks, compared to just a few days with shaving. Waxing also avoids razor burn, nicks, and stubble, and with regular sessions, hair often grows back finer and thinner. While shaving can offer immediate results, they are often very short lived and the irritation that quickly follows is often why people make the switch to waxing!

  • What is the difference between sugaring and waxing?

Both sugaring and waxing remove hair from the root, but they use different techniques and products. Sugaring is not wax - it is made from natural ingredients like sugar, lemon, and water. It is applied in the opposite direction of hair growth, then removed in the direction of the hair growth. Waxing, on the other hand, can be done with soft or hard wax and removes hair in the opposite direction of growth. Both methods leave you with smooth skin - it's just a matter of how it gets done. Ultimately, the manner of hair removal is more of a preference for the technician than the client, as they both achieve equal results. Jem Beauty Bar specializes in waxing services.

  • What should I do if my skin is irritated after waxing?

It’s normal to have some redness or sensitivity after waxing, but it should go away within a few hours. To calm irritation, you can use fragrance-free moisturizer, aloe vera gel, or even simply a cold compress to soothe the skin. Avoid hot showers, saunas, sweating, and tight clothing for at least 24 hours, as these can worsen irritation. At Jem Beauty Bar, we use hard wax which is very gentle and doesn’t adhere to the skin. This can help minimize irritation during your waxing visit with us!

  • Can I wax if I have eczema or psoriasis?

Yes, but proceed with caution! If your eczema or psoriasis is mild and not inflamed, waxing can be done safely. However, if you have active flare-ups, broken skin, or irritated patches, it’s best to wait until your skin has calmed down. Always let your esthetician know about any skin conditions before your appointment so they can choose the gentlest wax and technique for you, or avoid specific areas altogether.

  • Can I get waxed if I have a spray tan?

It’s best to get your wax before getting a spray tan - not after. Waxing removes the top layer of skin, which can strip away or cause an uneven tan if done afterward. If you’ve already had a spray tan, wait at least 4-5 days before waxing to avoid patchiness. To keep your skin glowing and hair-free, we recommend scheduling your wax 1-2 days before your spray tan for the best results!
